Sacred Sunrise: Windsor Classic Chorale
Friday May 11, 2018. The Windsor Symphony Orchestra Chorus is excited to join with the Windsor Classic Chorale in presenting Sacred Sunrise, featuring Antonio Vivaldi’s Beatus Vir, and Ola Gjeilo’s Sunrise Mass. Cinematic and powerful, Ola Gjelio’s Sunrise Mass awakens the senses with melody and harmonic chords evolving through themes nebulous and galactic to a warm solid landing, representing a spiritual journey from heaven to earth. Gjelio is a Norwegian composer living in the United States; he created Sunrise Mass in 2007 at the age of 29, sparking the career of this young composer and pianist. Sunrise Mass is matched with Antonio Vivaldi’s Beatus Vir, composed nearly 300 years earlier during the Baroque period. Beatus Vir, which translates to ‘blessed is the man’ was written to be sung at sunset vesper prayers on Sundays and holidays. A particularly challenging choral piece, Vivaldi’s skill with creating counterpoint melodies for two choirs to sing at the same time. Beatus Vir is characteristic of Vivaldi’s exuberant and playful compositions of this period.
