The Glass Menagerie (Cancelled)
Friday January 19 – Sunday January 21, 2018. Tennessee Williams’ strongly autobiographical memory play catapulted him from obscurity to fame when it premiered in 1944. Set in St. Louis in 1937, the action is drawn from the memories of the narrator, Tom Wingfield – an aspiring poet who toiles in a shoe warehouse to support his mother, Amanda, and sister, Laura. The family struggles to cope with the harsh realities of the Great Depression and the bitter memories that haunt them. The characters are based on Williams himself, his histrionic mother, and his mentally fragile sister. Chicago critics championed the play, allowing the producers to move it to Broadway where it won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. This was Williams’ first successful play; he went on to become one of America’s most highly regarded playwrights. A 2013 Broadway revival (starring Cherry Jones and Zachary Quinto) received seven 2014 Tony Award nominations (winning one), including Best Revival of a Play; and three Drama Desk Award nominations (winning two). Seven revivals and more than seventy years later, Williams’ most personal work continues to captivate and overwhelm audiences around the world. First-time Korda director, Andres Hausmann will direct Korda’s production of this theatre classic.
