While there are four main bodies of water in the Windsor Essex County region, you don’t need a boat to go fishing. You can fish from water-side parks and government docks (as long as there aren’t any “No Fishing” signs posted!). Long known as the #1 destination in the Great Lakes for walleye (pickerel), smallmouth bass and yellow perch, the western basin of Lake Erie annually gives up trophies in all species of game fish. Belle River has long been known as the “Muskie Capital of the World” due to the extremely large numbers of muskies caught there and is home to many muskie tournaments. Fishing is also good in many rivers, streams and canals in the region.
If you or someone you know would like to try fishing in Ontario waters for the first time (or the first time in a long time), Canadian residents can enjoy the fun of fishing in Ontario without a license during the annual Ontario Family Fishing Weekend held annually in July and February.
