In Honour of Martha Graham

Sunday, February 14, 2021

Martha Graham is considered by many to be the 20th century’s most important dancer and the mother of modern dance. In addition to revolutionizing how dance works, Graham thrived on commissioning new works by major American composers. The most popular of these is Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring. We perform it for you in its original chamber size which enables us to pair it with another Graham commission: Samuel Barber’s Cave of the Heart. Cave of the Heart’s stark dramatic music tells the story of Medea and the devastation she experienced with the loss of her children. Rounding out these works will be Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, another of Graham’s favourites.
