The Ontario Heritage Trust is pleased to announce digital Emancipation Day activities for 2020, from interviews with historians to musical performances by Black artists. Together, we will celebrate Ontario’s Black communities and explore Black heritage in the province.

July 30 – A Heritage Singers Canada performance. Check out the Heritage Singers Canada – a Caribbean folk group consisting of 22 members from Canada and the Caribbean.

July 31 – Preston Chase and Emma Ferreira. Mr. Emancipation is a short documentary about Walter Perry, who created the 1931 Emancipation Day celebration in Windsor, Ontario. In this video, we speak with the film’s director – Preston Chase – a seventh-generation African-Canadian born in Windsor. Emma Ferreira is a Dominican-Canadian artist, actor and poet working on her first book.

August 1 – Full Celebration of all of the presenters/performers’ videos plus a tour of Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site by Site Manager, Steven Cook
