Plan Some Fall Family Fun

The below blog was written prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and is designed to be used as inspiration for a future trip to Windsor Essex. Due to current circumstances, some of the locations listed in the blog may currently not be open, or may not be offering full services at this time.

Please contact any business prior to planning a visit.

School is back in session, but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! From local Ghost Walks to the Harvest and Horses Festival at J.R. Park Homestead, there’s plenty for the whole family to do this fall in Windsor Essex.

Kick off the Halloween season with the Ghosts of Pelee’s Past hike at Point Pelee National Park. Join an interpreter and walk in the footsteps of people who once called the park home to discover some of Point Pelee’s rich history, or head to Fort Malden National Historic Site for one of their Ghost Tours. There’s more spooky fun to be had in Windsor’s Sandwich Towne with The Spirits of Sandwich walking tour, starting at Mackenzie Hall Cultural Centre. Learn about some of the oldest buildings in the city and discover what sort of “things” have been lurking within them. A great way to experience some local history and have a few scares at the same time!

As it grows colder, head to Fort Malden, J.R. Park Homestead, or the Park House Museum for a trip back in time to learn how things were done in the good old days.

Fort Malden comes alive on September 29 and 30 with their Heritage Fair, featuring an array of exhibits, demonstrations, and entertaining shows from local heritage and cultural organizations. See antique vehicles, local museum displays, falconry, puppet shows, musical entertainment, and living history demonstrations. Visit historic merchant tents where you can purchase 19th century treats, pottery, candles, and hand-woven baskets, or stop by the BBQ and craft beer garden.

Come celebrate the fall harvest season at J. R. Park Homestead with the Harvest & Horses Festival, on October 14.  Listen to ghost stories in the attic, try some corn husk crafts, or see some cider-making! Meet the horses that made harvest possible 200 years ago. Take in the amazing parade of breeds or test your abilities in the blind buggy competition.

On October 21, The Park House Museum is sharing the history of Halloween with their All Hallows Eve Festival. There will be a Victorian funeral exhibit, a 1920s Halloween party exhibit, candle making, baking, woodworking, print shop and tinsmithing demonstrations, ghost stories, and games.

Fall is a great time to go apple-picking at Thiessen Orchards and while there, be sure not to get lost in the corn maze or take your chances walking through the Scaredy Cat Haunted Barn.

For more spooky fun in October, visit Colasanti’s Tropical Gardens for their Haunted Greenhouse, Horror Hedgemaze and Hayride, Fear Factor Show, and a nighttime indoor tour! Take a hayride through the zombie-infested multi-car crash disaster zone. Patrons will exit their ride and enter the moonlit Hedgemaze, where they will get up close and personal with creepy creatures and stroll through over 15 themed rooms.
