Windsor Diving Club gearing up to host the 2024 Canadian Diving Trials and Summer National Championships

Windsor, ON – History will be made from May 17-19, 2024, as Windsor hosts the prestigious Canadian Diving Trials and Summer National Championships at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre. This marks the first time Windsor has ever hosted an Olympic trial in any sport, which Mayor Drew Dilkens describes as “a monumental chapter for Windsor’s sporting community and a proud splash for our local diving club.”

Over three action-packed days, close to 50 of Canada’s top divers will make waves as they compete for national titles and the honour of representing Team Canada in the Men’s 10m, Women’s 3m, and Women’s 10m events at the upcoming Paris 2024 Summer Games. The event is not just a showcase of athletic excellence but also a celebration of national pride and the spirit of competition.

β€œIt’s a point of pride for us to welcome divers from all over the country who will be working to earn a place at the Paris 2024 Games. It also allows us to once again showcase the incredible WIATC facility, which continues to impress the local and national swim communities, and to build upon efforts to position Windsor as a dynamic city that places a premium on sport and development,” says Mayor Drew Dilkens, City of Windsor.

β€œHaving the 2024 Canadian Diving Trials and Summer National Championships come to our destination plays a crucial role in further developing the sport tourism portfolio within Windsor Essex.Β  With a proud history of bringing tournaments here that have satisfied organizers, coaches, participants, and spectators alike, it is clear we go above and beyond in satisfying the needs of our visitors.Β  In fact, annually we welcome tens of thousands of sport aficionados, with last year bringing in 15,000+ overnight stays. Beyond the event itself, our region provides the accommodations, amenities, places of interest, and food and beverage which is so critical for delegates to experience during their downtime while in-market,” adds Gordon Orr, CEO of Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island.

The event is presented by Speedo and proudly organized by Diving Plongeon Canada, Dive Ontario, and the Windsor Diving Club.

The Windsor Diving Club, born from the legacy of the city’s successful hosting of the FINA Diving World Series from 2014 to 2017, has, under the leadership of head coach Ioana Mariescu, become a growing force within the diving community. Coach Mariescu’s dedication and expertise have propelled the club to the forefront of the sport within the province.

Head Coach Ioana Mariescu shares the club’s enthusiasm: “To be hosting this national event at our pool, with such talented athletes, is a tremendous achievement for our club. It is a testament to the hard work and passion that fuels our team. And this is just the beginning – we have only scratched the surface of what we aim to accomplish.”

The hosting of this event is made possible through the generous partnership and financial support received through the Government of Ontario’s Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport (Ontario Sport Hosting Program), and from Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island. Not only will this event bring important benefits to the local sport community, it also will have a positive economic impact on the region.
